The serial killer isn’t on trial… He’s on the jury…

They were Hollywood’s hottest power couple. They had the world at their feet. Now one of them is dead and Hollywood star Robert Solomon is charged with the brutal murder of his beautiful wife.

This is the celebrity murder trial of the century and the defence want one man on their team: con artist turned lawyer Eddie Flynn.

All the evidence points to Robert’s guilt, but as the trial begins a series of sinister incidents in the courtroom starts to raise doubts in Eddie’s mind.

What if there’s more than one actor in the courtroom?

What if the killer isn’t on trial? What if the killer is on the jury?

Review

Go behind the scenes on a complicated and thrilling murder trial with Thirteen. Dig up hideous truths and undue torment caused by serial Killer, Joshua Kane, on a high profile case where he sits on the jury. Follow Eddie Flynn on his journey to prove Robert Solomon’s (Bobby) innocence and unravel mysteries about members of the jury bench.

One of the many great things about this novel is the fact you get perspectives from both characters. Why is Kane murdering all these innocent people? Will Eddie Flynn be able to crack the case? I loved following both character’s points of view with snappy, short chapters with enough depth to understand both sides of the story.

As the plot thickens, you gain insight into the demise of Flynn’s marriage due to his dangerous career choices. His attempts to rekindle his marriage fail several times. Thankfully, the storyline isn’t centered on that, it just gives a more realistic edge to Eddie’s character. His smart and quick thinking abilities shine throughout this novel. They show how skilled he is as an attorney and his unwillingness to give up on his clients. There’s a lot of respect that can be built for his character based on these points alone.

Kane is your typical notorious serial killer. He’s incredibly smart and has evaded capture for many years. Without a shadow of a doubt, he is a complete psychopath which, I suppose, is to be expected. Whilst his experiences can seem far-fetched, it helps provide the book with an extra layer of ‘thrill’. Most of his chapters show how excited he is by the prospect of ‘the kill’. He wants his victims to be high-profile and in some ways, he wants to be discovered. He’s grotesque in his methods and his sections can often leave your stomach in knots.

This is actually the fourth novel in Steve Cavanagh’s Eddie Flynn series but it can be read as a standalone. This was my first experience with a Cavanagh novel and I loved every second of it. The writing is clever and interesting. I was gripped from the tagline alone: “The serial killer isn’t on trial… He’s on the jury.” It is absolutely fantastic.

It’s an easy 5/5 from me. If legal thrillers are your thing, then I’d highly recommend Thirteen.

Until Next Time,

Luce xo
