This show has caused an intense amount of controversy due to some incredibly graphic scenes across both seasons. If you’re aware of the show and have seen it than this my opinion on THAT scene in episode 13 of season 2.
Let me start by saying this is not the first time I’ve watched a show that includes graphic and explicit content… I’ve seen a lot of shows with almost similar scenes in them. However, none have hit me as hard as that episode of 13RW S2 did. This does not discredit the fact that I was a complete wreck after season 1, and I mean distraught for at least a solid day after watching it all.
My honest opinion on 13 Reasons Why season 2…
Truth is, I flip-flopped about my feelings on the final episode on season 2 for an entire day before I came to the conclusion that it was all a bit too much for me to handle. Now, I’d been warned that the scene would be graphic but the unexpected part was how graphic they were. The distressing amount of violence that then got several hundred times worse with the mop rape added in took it too far for me, personally. There are some things you just don’t need to see including the scene later on where he’s bleeding after the attack. I was physically sick after watching that episode.
It’s easy to see why others feel differently. I understand the whole point of the show is to show every little detail and the harsh, disturbing realities of the world we’re living in. But I feel there are other – maybe, better – ways it could have been dealt with. It’s made me reflect on some of the scenes from season one and realise that they were quite horrific too.
A part of me just feels that you have to be completely blind to not realise these things happen in the real world. Realistically, times have changed and the world we live in is a mess because of evil people who commit terrible atrocities. Why does it take a TV show for some people to realise this?
Some final thoughts
I appreciate the show for highlighting these issues and I hope that people who need help are now getting it. If the show did inspire you to get help, that’s fantastic and I’m glad it’s having a positive impact. In my mind, I believe this show has done some good. There’s just a part of me that feels there are better ways to deal with the issues shown. The simple fact is you can warn people not to watch something but when everybody else is, they will feel that need to watch it regardless of the risks it could cause to their own mental health. This is something I do not blame the show for as it is an individual choice to watch it. All I’m saying is, warnings will not stop someone if they really want to watch it.
Let people have their own opinions on the show and the way it deals with the issues. Do not discredit someone else’s opinion simply because you don’t agree with it. I know there are many people who do not agree with my opinion on it and that’s perfectly fine. Bottomline: the show probably wont be cancelled and it is clearly having an impact on everyone who has watched it.
Until next time,
